Bill Creating African-American Commission Headed to Senate

A bill to create an African American Affairs Commission in Michigan awaits a vote in the state Senate.

The 15 member commission would advise the governor and Legislature on issues affecting the African-American community.

Bill sponsor, Senator Rick Jones says he was prompted to introduce the measure after he learned the commission didn’t already exist.

But Mia McNeil of the Greater Lansing Area MLK Commission says they don’t like that, as the bill is written, the commission would share its director with the Office of Hispanic/Latino Affairs.

The bill cleared a Senate committee.
