Bill Creating a “Blue Alert” Passes House Committee

A slightly altered version of a bill to help catch someone who injures or kills a police officer has passed a House committee.

The measure would create an alert similar to an Amber Alert that would send a message to the public if an officer in their area has been hurt or killed.

A house committee tacked on language to include the name or description of a person who ran away from the scene.

The Michigan State Police would run the Blue Alert System.

24 other states already have something similar in place.

The bill, which is sponsored by State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker, now awaits a vote in the full Michigan House.
