Former President Bill Clinton came to Michigan State University Wednesday to talk about his post-presidency work in public service.
Clinton was the keynote speaker at a public service forum where he received the university’s first Spartan Statesmanship Award for Distinguished Public Service.
During his speech, Clinton talked about the importance of public service in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
Clinton says we live in an interconnected world and decisions people make every day can either bring people together or tear them apart.
And, he says, when people feel unseen and unheard they become vulnerable to extreme messages like those from ISIS.
Clinton also touched on his wife, Hillary Clinton, saying he learned the importance of public service from Hillary because he saw how important it was to her.
Outside the event, several students protested racial inequality at the East Lansing school. The students’ chants could be heard as Clinton spoke.
