School districts would no longer have to provide paid leave for employees that use that time to do union work, under a bill that passed the state Senate Tuesday.
Senate Republican Marty Knollenberg sponsored the measure.
He says employees shouldn’t be performing union work on the taxpayer’s dime.
Knollenberg says union dues should have to cover that time.
But Senate Democrat Vincent Gregory says the change would mean union representatives couldn’t immediately help resolve employee-employer issues.
He says it’s just a matter of time before the legislature would have to return to the issue because school districts will want the union reps to handle those problems.
The bill now heads to the House.
