Bill Allowing Brewers to Use Social Media to Plug Events Passes House

Craft brewers in the state could use social media to bolster their marketing efforts under legislation that’s cleared the Michigan House.

State Representative Klint Kesto, R-Walled Lake, is sponsoring the bill and says breweries should be able to use Facebook and Twitter to plug events so long as no money changes hands.

Right now brewers can only do limited social media promotion and have to steer clear of mentioning a bar or liquor store by name because it’s seen as advertising.

Under the legislation, distributors, distillers and wine makers could use Facebook and Twitter for the same purposes.

The proposal now moves over to the Michigan Senate.
