A Michigan House committee in Lansing has opened discussions on a bill that alters a law that requires a person whose property has been seized by police to pay a bond.
Current law can require payment of 10-percent of the value of the property or $250.
And it has to be paid within 20 days of seizure just for a person to have a chance to win the property back.
The bill before the House Oversight and Ethics committee would stop that payment requirement.
The bill applies to property seized without process.
That includes incidents leading to a lawful arrest and other situations.
The committee was told last week that the state police made more than a million dollars last year from the bond payment requirement.
