Big Jackpots Mean More Money For Schools

Recent higher lottery jackpots are expected to bring in more money to the state School Aid Fund.

When the Powerball jackpot reached $1.6 billion lottery ticket sales spiked and those higher sales are expected to boost state revenue, according to state economists.

Jay Wortley of the Michigan Department of Treasury says they are estimating an extra $20 million dollars for schools.

However, state Treasurer Nick Khouri says it’s important to remember the money is the result of giant jackpots and doesn’t expect that increased revenue to be ongoing.

He also notes the School Aid Fund is $12 billion, so while $20 million is very helpful, he says it’s part of a much larger base.
