As President Trump prepares to unveil specifics about his budget proposal, U.S. Representatives from the Upper Great Lakes are again encouraging him to include money for the Soo Locks. A bipartisan letter originated by First District Representative Jack Bergman was delivered to the president late last week. It carries Bergman’s signature, along with those of 21 other representatives from both parties. Of the three locks at the Soo, only one can accommodate the largest of the freighters working the Great Lakes. The letter quotes a 2015 Department of Homeland Security study projecting that a six-month interruption in the locks’ operation would shave more than a trillion dollars of the national gross domestic product, and push national unemployment levels to double digits.
