Congressman Dan Benishek says he is doing everything he can to prevent the northern long-eared bat from being listed on the endangered species list. It could stop logging in the country including Michigan for as much as 6 months or more a year. Benishek, who serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, says the issue is not the loss of habitat but the white nose syndrome disease that is killing the bat. Officials estimate that more than 5.7 million bats of different species have been killed since white-nose syndrome was discovered in New York in 2006. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to make a decision by April.
