Benishek Comments on EPA Announcement of GLRI Grants

Washington, D.C. – Today, the EPA’s announced of the availability of nearly $14 million in grant funding for state, tribal, interstate and local governmental agencies, institutions of higher learning and other nonprofit organizations interested in improving and preserving the Great Lakes. Dr. Dan Benishek, a member of the Great Lakes Task Force, released the following statement:

“I have consistently fought to ensure that the Great Lakes Restoration Fund is fully funded so that grant programs such as these can be made available to those in our community who are seeking to protect the Lakes. I encourage anyone looking for further information on these grants or programs to reach out to my office.”

According to the EPA, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched in 2010 to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the largest system of fresh surface water in the world. Great Lakes Restoration Initiative resources have so far funded over 2,500 projects to improve water quality, to protect and restore native habitat and species, to prevent and control invasive species and to address other environmental problems in the Great Lakes basin. Applications are due September 28th, 2015.

Congressman Benishek is a member of the Great Lakes Task Force, a group of legislators dedicated to developing solutions to the environmental challenges facing the Lakes. A native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, he is Michigan’s only member of the Natural Resources Committee.
