WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) supported H.R. 2406, the ” Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, during a markup in the House Committee on Natural Resources today. This legislation, which he helped author, will work to protect and enrich our Nation’s hunting and fishing heritage while also promoting wildlife and habitat conservation in a responsible manner. Now that the Committee on Natural Resources has passed the legislation, the bill is eligible for consideration on the House floor.
“Hunting and fishing are a part of our national heritage, and it is just common sense that they should be permitted by default on all federal lands. This bill protects the rights of sportsmen to access and enjoy the lands that are owned by all of us, and I am proud to see this bill move through the legislative process,” said Dr. Benishek, an Iron River native and lifelong resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Dr. Benishek authored a component of the bill that would create an “open until closed” policy for sportsmens’ use of federal land and block environmentalist groups from limiting hunting, fishing and shooting on America’s federal properties.
“There are few things in life I enjoy more than going grouse hunting at my camp in the Ottawa National Forest, or trout fishing in the Paint River. These are activities that every American should have the opportunity to enjoy,” added Dr. Benishek, who serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources.
The initiative to protect sportsmen rights on federal lands is supported by organizations such as the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, National Rifle Association, Safari Club International, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, and the American Sportfishing Association.
