While high school athletes are competing in Ishpeming at the Michigan Nordic Ski Championships. The western Upper Peninsula’s future of Nordic skiing will take on the Maasto Hiihto trails in Hancock on Sunday. The return of the annual Norwegian kid’s ski race will take place on Sunday with kids meeting at the Hancock Trails Club Four Seasons Chalet. The Barnelopet is a non-competitive event that promotes outdoor recreation from an early age among the Copper Country’s youth. The Barnelopet is free for kids aged three to 17 thanks to the Keweenaw Are a Community Foundation cross-country ski endowment and the city of Hancock. Registration for the barnelopet will begin at 1 pm on Sunday with packs taking off at 2 pm. Kids will have the option to participate in 6 kilometers, 4k, 2 k and 1 k courses.
