Baraga Chamber Ice Melt Contest Underway

Keweenaw Bay ice finally solidified enough late last week for the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce to start its annual Ice Melt Contest.

The drum was placed on the ice off US-41 south of Baraga on Friday.

Contest participants can try to guess the date and time the barrel will fall through the ice this spring. The participant who has the closest guess, down to the minute, will win 50 percent of the net ticket proceeds.

Previous splash-throughs took place on March 30, 2020, March 22, 2021, and April 24, 2022.

Updates on ice conditions are provided by Indian Country Sports and reported on the Chamber website, along with results and terms of the Keweenaw Bay Ice Melt contest.

Ticket sales will end on March 20, 2023.

Tickets can be purchased at Indian Country Sports, the Hardwood Steakhouse, Skippers Bar and Grill, Northern Oil, L’Anse American Legion Post 144, the Bella Vista, Woodland Firearms, Wilkinson’s General Store, and the Chamber office in downtown L’Anse. Tickets may also be purchased through the Chamber website.
