Organizers of an effort to expand Michigan’s civil rights law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have decided to put off their ballot initiative.
The group Fair Michigan had hoped to put an equal rights proposal on the 2016 ballot, but called it quits following opposition from some LGBT groups.
Danna Nessel of Fair Michigan says, had the issue made the ballot, she’s confident it would have passed.
However, she says, due to infighting among the LGBT community, donors were scared off and they weren’t able to raise the money to run the kind of campaign they needed to be successful.
The proposal would have asked Michigan voters to amend the state constitution to prohibit discrimination based on gender, gender identity and sexual orientation.
Fair Michigan needed to collect over 315,000 signatures to get the question on the ballot.
