A controversial mining project in Menominee County has received two permits from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Aquila Resources’ Back Forty Project received a Nonferrous Metallic Mining Permit, and a Michigan Air Use Permit to Install. MDEQ says the decision was made after a full review of the application, and comments by citizens. The Department is still looking into two other important permits, which deal with pollution elimination and wetlands preservation. Aquila’s Back Forty Mine Project is located west of Stephenson, along the Wisconsin border. Aquila hopes to extract zinc and gold from a sulfide deposit there.
