As a Grand Rapids based Retailer continues to grow, the company has expressed an interest in opening a new location in Houghton. At last night’s city council meeting it was revealed that Meijer has submitted a letter of intent to purchased a 10 acre parcel of land from the city. The city is entertaining the idea of selling the lot, which was recently appraised at $200,000. City manager, Eric Waara says that any future development is only in the inquiry stage this point, and the retailer would also need to purchase neighboring parcels to acquire enough land to build a department store. The location of the parcel is near the intersection of Sharon Avenue and M-26 close to a used car lot. The Company is making preparation to open it’s recently built department store and gas station in Marquette. That location is scheduled to open at the beginning of Memorial Day weekend.
