The longest closing to date in the ongoing extensive maintenance project of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge is coming up this weekend.
The bridge will be closed for 11 1/2 hours starting Saturday night at 9:00pm. The bridge is scheduled to reopen at 8:30am Sunday morning.
Unlike the shorter bridge closings of late, snowmobiles will not be able to cross during this overnight closure.
Two hour closures will take place each morning for the rest of this week beginning tomorrow through Friday. The bridge will be closed from 2:00 to 4:00am each day.
Short periodic closures of about 10-20 minutes each will continue as they have been all month from 7:00pm to 6:00am.
Waiting rooms on each side of the Portage Canal have been arranged for motorists without an alternate place to stay during the all-night bridge closure Saturday night.
The Magnuson Hotel Franklin Square Inn in Houghton and Lakeview Manor in Hancock have agreed to provide warm spots for motorists to sit and wait for the bridge to reopen.
Work on the bridge is expected to be completed in mid-April.
