Several Upper Peninsula fire departments are receiving funds for upgraded equipment and tools used at fires and traffic accidents. Earlier in the week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced three fire departments will receive over 460,000 dollars. The grants are come from federal department’s FEMA Firefighter grants program.

The Ahmeek Fire Department was awarded just over 37,830 dollars to purchase new turnout gear and a set of Jaws of Life. The Laurium Village Fire Department will upgrade firefighters’ turnout gear. While the Osceola Township Fire Department will use another 100,000 dollars to improve operations and safety.

Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters expressed the importance of the roles fire departments play in rural areas of the state.
