With tax season upon us, the Michigan Attorney General’s office is offering some tips to avoid becoming a victim of the latest tax and IRS related scams.
Andrea Bitely of the A.G.’s office says scams to watch out for are high pressure calls from people claiming to be from the IRS demanding immediate payment or others offering a sizable rebate for filing early, then ask for bank account information.
She also says not to be fooled by email scams that may look like they’re from the IRS. She says the IRS will never contact you by email.
Bitely also urges consumers not to provide any of their financial information over the phone.
If you’ve been targeted by these scams you’re asked to report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration hotline at 800-366-4484.
