Democrats in Lansing have introduced legislation requiring insurance companies to make abortion coverage available at least as a rider with their health policies. A new Michigan law prohibits the companies from offering abortion coverage as part of regular coverage. But the Democrats say that as a result, only seven out of 42 insurers even offer it as a rider. And seven, they say, is not enough. The admit that the bill has little chance in the current legislature, but they are hopeful there could be action in the future. It’s not clear when or even if the proposal will get a hearing in the Republican-controlled legislature.
