A Series of Meth Bills Debated in a MI House Committee

A pair of Upper Peninsula lawmakers want to strengthen the state’s methamphetamine laws while, at the same time, cutting someone a break for buying large amounts of one of the key ingredients in making meth.

State Representative Ed McBroom is behind one of the bills, which would up the fine and jail time for making meth near a school or library.

Another series of bills would give a prosecutor the option to charge someone who bought pseudoephedrine to make meth with a misdemeanor, instead of a felony.

State Representative John Kivela is sponsoring those measures and says it’s only fair to cut someone a break every now and then.

However that person would be added to a list of people who couldn’t buy pseudoephedrine for five years.

None of the bills were voted on during a hearing Tuesday.
