A Phone Scam & A Facebook Scam Targeting Local Residents

Police in the Copper Country are warning residents about a pair of scams that have made their way to the area.

The first scam is a phone call saying that you have won the lottery. You’re then asked to send money to a bank in South Africa.

Several reports say that people have gone to their bank to send the money, but bank officials discouraged them from doing so.

The second scam involves Facebook.

Police say that a resident reported that they received a friend request on Facebook from someone who was already a friend.

Upon accepting the request, the person was directed by their friend to a government program that’s offering money.

When that person visited the website, they were then immediately contacted by someone claiming they had won a prize and had to send in $1,000 to claim it.

The person instead contacted their friend and learned that they had not sent the friend request.

The Michigan State Police advise people to be wary of anything that sounds too good to be true and to be sure to protect their identity.

If you feel you have been the victim of a scam or fraud, you’re asked to contact your local police agency.
