Houghton Seeks To Become Hockeyville USA

Detroit may be Hockeytown…but Houghton is looking to be named the first Hockeyville USA.

Kraft Foods has been running the Hockeyville Canada contest for some time…but now U.S. cities will get their chance to take part in the annual event.

Cities nominate their own ice rink and then compete for the title.  The grand prize is $150,000 for improvements to your hometown rink and the hosting of an NHL preseason game.

City Manager Eric Waara says the city of Houghton must first present an essay detailing why Dee Stadium should get the honor.

The essay is due later in March.

If Houghton is one of the finalists selected from thousands of entries across the country, they’ll move to the second round–which will be held in April that will be decided through voting.

Votes would be entered via text, telephone or through the Kraft Hockeyville website.

The winner would be notified in May.
