MDOT Reacts To Cold Temps

A stretch of M-28 in Marquette County will remain closed for at least this morning.

Due to worsening weather conditions, a decision has been made by the Alger and Marquette Road Commissions in conjunction with the Michigan State Police, and Michigan Department of Transportation officials to close M-28 indefinitely between the City of Munising and Kawbawgam Road in Marquette County.

Due to High winds, poor road conditions and visibility M-28 will remain closed and be re-evaluated mid-day today.

As a reminder, the two-hour closure of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge has been postponed until this Saturday.

The Michigan Department of Transportation had originally scheduled the closures for 2am to 4am earlier this morning and yesterday morning. But with the current blistering cold temperatures, M-DOT decided to move the date.

The closure will now take place Saturday night or early Sunday morning between 2am and 4am.

The contractor for M-DOT will be lowering balance chains on the Lift Bridge as part of the $8.4 million bridge renovation.
