31 Backpacks Resumes Helping Area’s Less Fortunate Families

Another school year is underway and 31 Backpacks has been  busy preparing hygiene products and weekend meals for the area’s less fortunate students.

Area school districts have been gathering information during the 1st week of school, and will now report current numbers to Founder, Laurel Maki.

Volunteers will then assemble the bags to be dropped off to students’ backpacks in their lockers, while they’re in class on Friday.

The organization, which started in the Spring of 2012, began helping less fortunate families in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

Baraga County was added after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Monetary donations are always needed, and everyone who helps the organization does so on a volunteer basis.

Currently, volunteers are needed in Calumet and Hancock.

Information on donating is available here
