$30 Million Flint Supplemental Passes House, Goes Back To Senate

The Michigan House has given the green light to a $30 million supplemental spending bill Thursday intended to reimburse Flint residents for their water bills.

The money will be offered as a credit to Flint residents who have been paying water bills between April of 2014 and now or as a credit for future payments.
It only covers a portion of their water bill and doesn’t include sewer costs.

Businesses are getting a small credit too.

There’s also money in the bill to reimburse the city’s water fund. However Jody Lundquist, Flint’s chief financial officer, says even with that money the fund will run out of money by the end of the year as more and more people stop paying their water bills.

She says the only way to stem that is to improve the infrastructure in Flint, which would boost the public’s confidence in what comes out of the tap.

The city’s water is undrinkable after lead from service pipes leached into the drinking water.

The spending bill bounces back to the Senate for final consideration.
