The Portage Lake Lift Bridge will be closed this Friday and Saturday morning between 2:00 A.M. and 4:00 A.M.
You will not be able to cross the bridge during this time, though snowmobile traffic will be permitted on the lower bridge deck.
Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly urges drivers not to try and cross during the closures.
At last night’s city council meeting, he noted that a few drivers have tried to slip through the barricades and cross anyways.
Doing this is not only extremely dangerous to you and to the workers on the bridge but it is also illegal–and it’s not too difficult to find out who the driver is and prosecute them if necessary.
Additional closures will be scheduled at a later date.
