A 12-year-old child was trapped and badly injured when the basement of a house on Canal Road collapsed early today.
Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at 5:00 this morning. The child’s father was able to dig the child out, and performed CPR. Because of road damage, deputies and Stanton Township first responders had to borrow a neighbor’s boat to transport the child across the Portage to the Hancock City boat launch. Mercy Ambulance completed the trip to UP Health System-Portage.
Officials say a pulse was restored, and the child was scheduled to be airlifted to an unspecified children’s specialty hospital for further treatment. The child’s identity and condition have not been released, nor has the reason for the collapse of the basement wall.
