A 116 year old shipwreck has been found at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
The cargo steamship John V. Moran was discovered sitting in 375 feet of water just off the coast of Muskegon last month.
Valerie van Heest of Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates says the Moran sank in February 1899 during a Milwaukee to Muskegon crossing.
She says it’s one of the most intact shipwrecks ever found in Lake Michigan.
van Heest says they used a remote operated vehicle to view the wreck, but dive teams will examine the ship in the next couple of weeks.
She says there are about 2,000 shipwrecks in Lake Michigan.
Only 350 of them have been found.
She says every time one of the wrecks is found it’s like finding a window into the state’s past.
