Youth hockey tournament debuting in Baraga County

Baraga County is getting a youth hockey tournament. The Baraga County Chamber of Commerce is working with Elite Amateur Sports from downstate to organize the event. Peewee, squirt, and bantam teams will all be featured across two arenas. Dubbed the Frozen Cup, it is the first time in years that kids will be on the ice in a competitive capacity at the sites.

Chamber President Debbie Stouffer says the field is almost set.

We have a space for one more team in each division, so we’re trying to get that firmed up by next week.

Play begins at Baraga and Meadowbrook Arenas on the 17th.

Meadowbrook Arena was the first area rink to reopen following the onset of the pandemic. That helped draw teams from as far away as Iron River and Marquette to use the facility, which helped lay the seeds for the upcoming tournament.
