WUPHD, Keweenaw Waters Resort Awaiting Approval from EGLE, MDHHS Before Construction Begins

Progress on the Keweenaw Waters Resort has stalled, due to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services and EGLE careful consideration. The health department spoke yesterday with MDHHS and EGLE to get a status update on the campground’s site approval. Both departments have concerns with lack of knowledge of what contents are within the stamp sands that make up much of the land for the future campground.

I would guess at this point, part of whatever they come up with is going to ed up being a maintenance plan of some sort, physical barriers, signage. I think one of the concerns they’re dealing with too is, in order for anything to really move forward, somebody needs to know what’s in those stamp sands. Which is what we originally proposed to them was to develop a sampling plan. – Kate Beer, Chief Health Officer, WUPHD

The EPA previously covered the stamp sands at the location, and left the property as “buyer beware”, regarding the contents of the sands. The health department is patiently awaiting the decision from the state agencies. And both the City of Houghton and the county have sent letters of support for the Keweenaw Waters Resort to MDHHS and EGLE. Urging both to approve the plans, and have construction get underway. Both state agencies will likely request some sort of sample tests be taken prior to construction, and come to a decision within the coming weeks.
