Winter parking rules will start to take effect around the copper country at midnight tonight. Many municipalities in the region will require vehicles to move off of the street between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. so that plow truck drivers can clear roads of snow. Please check with your municipality for specific rules and regulations this winter.
In the city of Houghton, winter parking will look much different than in years past now that the parking deck has been demolished. The parking deck was a quick solution to the city’s winter parking problems, but Chief of police John Donnelly says that his department hopes to have this first year of new rules run smoothly. The police department has already begun working with residents who live in the downtown area to make proper accommodations.
“It’s new to us. So we’ll probably have to adjust as we go. For the ones that do not want to move back and forth, we’ve made accommodations for under the bridge, in the Grace United Methodist, and down just east of the Krist. So people that want to stay there longer we can have them park there. Like I said we’ll get through it.” John Donnelly, Chief of Police, Houghton Police Department
Chief Donnelly explained further that each year winter parking causes a strain on the department with the annual influx of college students, and the transient nature of where students live in the city. Residents expecting to park overnight downtown will need an overnight parking permit. Those parking in that lot will be required to move their vehicles depending on the day, so plows can clear each side of the parking lots on Lakeshore Drive.
Please contact your local municipality for winter parking information specific to your area.
