Wet snow brings down utility pole, causes outages

Power is out near the Village of L’Anse and the surrounding areas to the south. Wet snow, mixed with sleet and ice, fell across the region, and seems to be the culprit.

A winter weather advisory warned of up to six inches by mid-afternoon Tuesday. The village has its own municipal electric utility and they could not be reached. UPPCO’s map showed over 330 customers without power as of 11 AM. Company representatives were unavailable for comment as was L’Anse Village Manager Bob LaFave. Baraga County offices are also dealing with a power outage.

Some pictures are surfacing online, including at Lambert’s Auto Service on US-41. A utility pole snapped about two-thirds of the way up bringing wires down with it. The image was posted to the company’s Facebook page.
