The Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget scoured statewide for the 2021 Christmas tree, eventually settling on a selection from near the Wisconsin border. A 63-foot spruce from Marenisco will stand proudly outside of the Capitol Building in Lansing beginning on October 30th. Adornment will start next month and a lighting ceremony is tentatively scheduled for November 19th.
The decorating theme has not yet been announced, but the Michigan Capitol Commission will need to order a lot of bulbs to cover the full limbs branching outward story after story. They’ll use a crane and full crew to secure the tree. It is tradition for the local Boy Scout troop to cut the binding that is utilized to make transportation easier.
Carla Fletcher and her family own the Marinesco property that the tree is located on. She says, “We came to the cabin for the weekend and saw a note posted that said the State of Michigan was interested in a tree growing close to the cabin. I thought it was a joke at first, but decided to call the number. It’s amazing that our tree will travel to Lansing for the holidays.”
Twenty-four UP trees have been selected for the honor. The Fletcher’s spruce is only the second from Gogebic County.
