Western UP Health Department gets $20,000 grant

The National Association of County and City Health Officials has awarded the Western UP Health Department a $20,000 grant, one of only four given throughout the country. Each award is aimed at bolstering communications with mothers and their families.

Sue Kauppi says the WUPHD program will take the form of a phone app to quickly disseminate information about events and tips that can help keep young kids through adolescents safe.

We want to ask parents about what they want to know. So maybe they want to know about some developmental things. We have on our board with the Great Start Collaborative for our five counties. We have Head Start and home visiting people. We have WIC and MIHP.

In addition to information on developmental programs and educational opportunities, expect reports like beach conditions in the summertime. Kauppi says the grant is intended to create a synergy between the various agencies and divisions of the health department.

It’s a grant to merge emergency preparedness and maternal child health and to make that kind of connectedness in our community. We know that people feel safer and know better when we know what is going on in our community.

The “What’s UP in Your Neighborhood” app is expected to be rolled out soon. Kauppi says it is being used as a pilot program and could be adopted across the country if successful.
