Waste Management charging more for L’Anse garbage collection

Trash collection rates will be increasing slightly in the Village of L’Anse. At last night’s meeting, village council members voted to approve a five-year extension with Waste Management for refuse pickup. Village manager Bob LaFave said the company has been doing an excellent job.

It’s still a fantastic value. If it’s bagged and tied and at the curb, it goes away.

Other council members agreed. The new contract includes a four percent increase to account for inflation. To cover that, monthly residential rates will increase from $14 to $15, and commercial rates will rise from $22 to $23, beginning January 1st. It’s the first trash collection increase since 2014.

The L’Anse council also accepted the grant money for improvements at the marina. The $120,000 project will provide a new floating dock, and a seawall which will have seating for visitors, and will also help prevent sediment from washing into the harbor. The project is expected to be completed this coming summer. Most of the cost will be covered by the state.

And, council members saluted a successful Light Up Baraga County Christmas event this past Saturday. Attendance at the parade and the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony was strong, and the parade included a large number of creative entries. The first-time event will be repeated next year, on December 10th.
