Visit Keweenaw Challenges Locals to Predict This Winter’s Snowfall

Up in the Copper Country, residents have a big claim to fame. Regularly topping the charts across the country for regions’ annual snowfall. Some locals may even have developed a keen sense of how much snow the Copper Country will get during any given year. Visit Keweenaw knows that the area’s residents are big fans of snow, and getting outdoors in the winter. And the organization wants to challenge the area to a snowfall prediction contest.

On average the Keweenaw Peninsula will see between 200 and 300 inches of snow. Some years the region has received less snow than others. The record low season total didn’t even reach 100 inches of snow in 1930. However the region’s record high for snowfall, marked in 1978, reached a little over 350 inches of snow.

How the contests work, Visit Keweenaw will collect snowfall guesses by December 15th. They will use the totals provided by the Keweenaw County Road Commission, as the department updates the region’s snowfall during the season. The winner will be notified after the Keweenaw Peninsula enters into a spring. Snow could fall as late as May 2nd, like last year, so Visit Keweenaw will have plenty of time to collect as much snow as possible to bring the region the snowfall total for 2023 and 24.
