Vaccine expansion expected to be handled in stride

Statewide, COVID-19 vaccines will be available to all adults 16 and older beginning Monday, but some sites are already distributing shots based on that criteria, including Baraga County Memorial Hospital. You can find the Facebook post with more information here.

Chief Medical Director for the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Robert Van Howe says he doesn’t expect any complications from the added eligibility, as this is just another step in a more gradual process.

Each time we open it up to a larger group we get an influx of calls. We take their information and try to prioritize based on if they have any health conditions, and put them on to a waitlist. So, we do keep that information on people and get back to them when we do have enough vaccine to get to them.

Neighboring states like Ohio have already made vaccines available to all adults. Bridge Magazine reports that distribution sites in Toledo and other neighboring cities are catering to thousands of Michiganders.

A potential complication is arising at the national level, though. A Baltimore, Maryland plant that had hoped to produce the Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccine has announced that 15 million doses had potentially been ruined. It is the first large-scale setback of this kind. Emergent Biosystems was hoping to become another vaccine supplier. Its failure does not affect the current amount available, but could crimp efforts to expand the shots to everyone who wants one.
