Beginners are invited to drop the puck on a hockey officiating career this Saturday at Calumet High School. Lessons will be provided for Level One refereeing up to more advanced certifications. You can expect to spend at least four hours at the session, and more than that for the lower stages. Marc Norton says that there is an instructional component and on-ice segment, which will happen at the Colosseum.
Norton says that he originally got into calling games because his kids picked it up. He had no experience prior.
Norton says that he is continuously improving his craft, and USA Hockey certification allows him to call youth games. You’ll probably start with either bantam or pee wee contests. For those with dreams of being on the ice for high school and college games, the institutions governing those matchups have their own certification process. USA Hockey lessons can be the first stepping stone to that path.
If you can’t make the seminar, email Norton at chassignor@charter.net. Cost depends on the level and goes up to $90 for enrolling in a session.
