US-41 traffic shift, M-26 ramp closure next week as part of Hancock project

Safety features: – A speed limit of 25 mph in the US-41 Hancock work zone is in place. – Closing US-41 lanes and the M-26 ramp will provide workers with safe, protected work zones and provide motorists with the safest route possible through the area.

May 5, 2017 — Motorists will see a new traffic pattern at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) US-41 reconstruction project in Hancock beginning May 8 or 9.

Beginning Monday or Tuesday, all US-41 (Front Street) traffic will shift to the northbound lanes of the highway, maintaining one lane in each direction on Front Street between the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and Reservation Street. The southbound US-41 connector ramp to eastbound M-26 toward Ripley will be closed. Work will commence on the southbound lanes of US-41 and the connector ramp. Southbound US-41 traffic will cross the median back to the normal lanes as it enters the lift bridge.

Traffic from Ripley to Houghton will be detoured through Hancock along a posted detour route. Traffic from Hancock to Ripley will be detoured through Houghton along a posted detour route.

The lift bridge will be restricted to operating on the hour, with no lifts for pleasure craft allowed at the peak hours of 8 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is completing the reconstruction of US-41 in Hancock, which began in 2016. In the final phases of the project, MDOT will invest $2 million to reconstruct Front Street between Reservation Street and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, as well as and the southbound US-41 connector ramp to eastbound M-26.             Project map: https://goo.gl/UeV6kL
