Upper Peninsula representatives plan to participate in upcoming pickets to support the Michigan Corrections Officers Union. Next week while MCOU members host informational pickets, representatives Greg Markkanen, Dave Prestin, and Senator Ed McBroom plan to attend sessions at the Chippewa Correctional Facility, Baraga Correctional Facility, and Marquette Branch Prison. The legislators will show support for officers and staff in Michigan Prisons that are impacted by staff shortages, mandatory overtime, and unsafe staff-to-inmate ratios. Last month the representatives, along with the Michigan Corrections Organization, called on the state to address the issue. Senator McBroom has introduced legislation that would seek to address the staff shortage in Michigan prisons through increased wages and a better retirement plan more in line with state police.
