Upper Peninsula community gathers resources for Hurricane Helene relief in Tennessee

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Jason Barbier and his three eldest sons are preparing for a 10-day mission in Jonesborough, Tennessee, where they will work as a cut team clearing debris for aid vehicles to reach people in need.

As of October 10, the family has secured a semitruck and driver to accompany them on the trip.

With the truck and driver secured, they can now accept community donations to the cause.

Below is a list of needs for the people in Tennesse:

  • water and canned food (pop top preferrable)
  • toilet paper
  • first aid supplies
  • tents and pop-up canopies
  • small propane tanks
  • diesel fuel in bulk or 5-gallon gas containers
  • small generators
  • hand sanitizers, wipes and soap
  • hygienic products
  • hay for livestock
  • small bags of dog and cat food
  • flashlights and batteries
  • work gloves
  • flat shovels
  • boxes and shrink wrap to transport donated items

This list is not exhaustive. Contact Jessica Barbier at 906-251-1488 for a current and complete list of needs.

If you would like to donate items to the mission, drop offs will be held October 19 from 3-6 p.m. and October 20 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at M95 storage.

The family is also accepting cash donations, which can be dropped off at Peter’s Hardware in Republic.

Money donated to the cause will go toward fuel and resources while the Barbiers are in Tennesse, and extra money will be paid forward to the next group of volunteers once the family returns home.
