United States Coast Guard Station Portage Invites the Community to an Open House

The United States Coast Guard’s local station invites the Copper Country to tour their boats and learn more about joining their ranks tomorrow. During the open house, the US Coast Guard Station Portage will share why they joined, and tell the community a little about what their station does on Lake Superior.

Most other Coast Guard units do a couple of different missions. But here we do that in the summer. Because in the winter it shifts around, and we become landlocked by the ice. So we end up doing ice rescues for a good portion of the season. Which is slower during that time. We don’t have too many rescues on ice. But it can be a good time for personal development. We have a lot of guys that go to school part-time. And then it’s just a fun change of the seasons, it’s cool up here in the summer, and cool in the winter. And by the time the summer rolls around we’re very busy, and we’re back right into our boating season.” Casey Hargrave, Petty Officer 2nd Class, U.S. Coast Guard – Station Portage

U.S. Coast Guard – Station Portage also invited local law enforcement and fire departments to join the open house so kids could check out other response vehicles too. During the open house, a recruitment booth will provide information to those interested in learning more about joining the Coast Guard. The coast guard station’s Open House will run from 3 to 5 p.m. tomorrow. The US Coast Guard Station Portage is located at 22911 Chippewa Trail in Dollar Bay. Find more details here.
