Treat Street and Boo on the Bay kick off Halloween period

Downtown L’Anse and Houghton are both getting spooky, but not too spooky this weekend. Family fun is the name of the game. Boo on the Bay is Baraga County’s biggest trick or treating event. From four to six today, kids will be encouraged to stop at businesses to nab some goodies. Live music by the Northern Witches will set the mood, and beginning at 6:00, a special kids version of the Howl-O-Scream Haunted House runs for two hours at Meadowbrook Arena. Polly Schaefer talks about the difference between the normal tour and the kid-friendly edition.

We have five to seven actors that walk you through to each destination, and the little ones are given a finger light, so they can shine it on anything dark. The music’s going to be different, it’s gonna be fun. Possibly more lighting in some of the areas, and none of our animatronics are going to be on.

Saturday, Houghton will be closing Shelden Avenue for three hours to ensure that everything can be done outdoors. Manager Eric Waara says there will be no haunted house inside City Center, but there are plenty of substitute activities.

Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce is actually going to have a petting zoo and pony rides, and I think a photo booth starting at three PM.

Waara says Treat Street is a great way to safely gather with other community members.
