Tragic homicide in Lakefield Township

At 8:00 PM Tuesday, Michigan State Police responded to a home in Lakefield Township, where they discovered a 10-year-old girl murdered by her teenage brother. The 14-year-old boy is believed to have shot and killed her. He has been arrested and will face open murder charges. He was arraigned in 92nd District Court Wednesday night. The boy is being held at the Sault Tribal Juvenile Detention facility.

Lakefield Township is located in Luce County between Newberry and Germfask. Manistique Lake is on its southern border. M-77 and the Seney Wildlife Refuge are about two miles to the west.

Because the suspect is a minor, his name is not being released.

Updated to reflect that MSP fielded the call at 8 PM on Tuesday.
