Townsend Drive project ending tomorrow

After a couple of delays, traffic will be returning to normal through the campus of Michigan Tech. The end of work on Townsend Drive comes at the perfect time as Homecoming and parent’s weekend create heavier traffic than normal in the area.

In a press release, the Michigan Department of Transportation cites utility and water main conflicts as the main causes for the construction dragging on. It was originally supposed to be finished in early September. Traffic going north has been rerouted onto Cliff Drive in recent months. Southbound vehicles have been shifted onto recently reconstructed north lanes on the opposite side of the median from College Avenue to the Rozsa Center.

When the stretch reopens Townsend Drive will lose a lane in each direction. In total, MDOT is spending $9 million to repave about 1.1 miles of road. Next year they will widen College Avenue and add a left hand turn lane, make adjustments to traffic through Franklin Square before completing work up to Isle Royale Street.
