The summer has gotten off to a great start in the Keweenaw Peninsula, with hotels and campgrounds near full occupancy. Rooms are going for well over $200 per night if you can find one at all. On the weekends, that’s nearly impossible.
Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Brad Barnett says he is hearing only good things when surveying lodging establishments throughout the area. That is not expected to change soon. Barnett says the organization tries to work 6-12 months ahead. All of its metrics show a great fall color season in store, assuming Mother Nature cooperates.
Vacationers have found the Keweenaw in increasing numbers lately, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The region will get an international spotlight this Sunday thanks to the National Geographic channel series, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted. A watch party is scheduled for that night at the Rozsa Center, doors opening at 8:30 PM.
A worker shortage continues to hamper businesses from taking full advantage of the situation. Barnett says that isolated parts of the Keweenaw, like Copper Harbor, will need a more robust guest visa program in the years ahead.
