Tips for Safely Shoveling Snow

With single digit temperatures in the forecast… Keweenaw area residents are reminded to stock up on winter gear and be prepared for the cold and snow.

Snow shovels, gloves, hats, space heaters and generators, are all hot commodities in these ridiculously cold temperatures. In fact Swift Hardware in Houghton is selling those winter necessities just as fast as they come in.

The Hardware store is reminding Keweenaw residents of a few safety tips to follow when shoveling snow.

  1. Be sure to take breaks when shoveling and do not over exert yourself.

  1. Its best to use a shovel that you are comfortable with.

“My favorite shovel…. it’s lightweight and it works really well on wood because it doesn’t scratch, it’s all plastic and it’s really durable. So it’s my favorite shovel because it’s lightweight.” Said store manager, Mary Smith.

While some scoop just a little bit of snow at a time making the shovel lighter to handle, other models to tackle a larger payload.

Employee Clyde Miller describes why his favorite is one known as the Yooper Scooper. “When it comes to shoveling snow I use the Yooper Scooper because it’s… well it’s easy. I’m used to doing it because I’ve probably been doing it for 50 years.”

3. When shoveling it’s important to drink hot fluids, layer clothing for warmth, and most importantly try not to sweat while out in the cold air.

Sweat quickly changes temperature this time of year and rapidly cools the human body,  rendering those layers of clothing less effective and making it very uncomfortable for the shoveler.
