Three Men Charged for Starting Fire that Burned Several Acres of Isle Royale National Park

The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan announces federal charges have been filed against three men accused of starting a fire in 2022 in the Isle Royale National Park. Dyan Wagner 29 of Grand Rapids, Jason Allard 28 of Macomb, and Scott Allard 30 of Clinton Township are charged with one count of lighting, tending, or sing a fire causing real property damage, and one count of violating conditions established by the Isle Royale Park superintendent.

In August 2022 the three men were camped north of the junction for Mount Franklin and Tobin Harbor Trails. At the site, the men are believed to have set up an illegal camp and started a fire outside of a designated metal fire ring. The fire then grew, causing a wildfire that burned for approximately two weeks. The fire damaged a little more than 11 acres in total. During the incident, several hiking trails and campsites were closed for public safety concerns. 

Both charges carry up to 6 months in prison, a 5,000 dollar fine, and 5 years of probation if found guilty for each individual. U.S. Attorney Mark Totten says that these alleged crimes threatened the safety of park visitors, employees, and the ecosystem that sustains diverse wildlife and flora.
