The Search Continues For Trailhead Water Source In Greenland Township

The DNR will begin the search for the source of the unregulated water supply in Greenland Township at the head of Bill Nichols Rail-Trail, off M-38 near the historic Lake Mine.

The springtime weather will now allow the search to continue.

State, county, and local entities are working cooperatively to find the source for the water to ensure it is safe for drinking.

EGLE extended the deadline to find the source and determine if there are any alternatives for the water source to the end of next month.

Luckily, a retired county mine inspector said he could direct the team to the source once the snow melted.

The searchers will determine if the well is properly constructed and if the source is naturally protected, and if it isn’t, the well water will need to be treated or properly abandoned.

There is currently an advisory notice posted at the site to not use the roadside spigot, and will continue until a decision is made.
